Gino Banks at TAG

October 23, 2023

When we talk about drumming in the industry, Gino Banks is one of the biggest names we hear. TAG has had the honor of recording the maestro multiple times. However, his visit in 2021 was a unique one. He decided to bring along his Pearl Master Select kit and his Meinl cymbals, which are also two brands he endorses.

This unique palette of sounds was refreshing and pleasant to the ears. It was a beautiful experience under Gino's guidance. The entire session was held in TAG's Studio C which features a large format SSL 32 channel console with Genelec and Amphion monitoring and is equipped with an array of outboard gear including API, Shadow Hills, Neve and many more. One of the Directors of TAG - JK, was responsible for tracking one of Gino's tracks which he did using TAG's inhouse mic inventory. He added surprise elements to the track by using the Audix SCX overheads which are bell shaped Cardiod condensers, perfect to capture a natural stereo imaging.

The Studio C at TAG offers immense versatility because of its width, height and opens up many possibilities. One can go the old school way instead of using plugins and place the mics wherever they want until they get the desired sound.

This session also involved one of the long-time support pillars of TAG - Indrajit Sharma who has films like Taare Zameen Par under his belt. He takes a lot of masterclasses and workshops for film scoring for the students TAG is lucky to have him onboard on their team of lecturers. This 8 hour long session with Indrajit, Gino and Benny Da was packed with fun, laughter, memories and some PHENOMENAL WORK!
