As part of the mentorship module at The Audio Guys Institute, students witnessed an inspiring and insightful workshop on songwriting conducted by singer and songwriter Razik Mujawar. The session dived into songwriting and lyrical structure, giving students an understanding of how a good song combines meaningful lyrics, compelling rhythm, and thoughtful arrangement.
The Essence of Songwriting:
Razik Mujawar began the workshop by introducing students to songwriting and lyrical structure. He explained to students the importance of storytelling in every great song—how a good song tells a story and evokes different emotions. Students were encouraged to think outside the box and understand the importance of emotions, experiences, and storytelling in music. Furthermore, he explained how lyrics can shape the mood and genre of a song, whether it's romantic, emotional, or energetic. He illustrated the entire process using instances from his experience, helping students understand that authenticity is necessary to make a song memorable.
Lyrical Structure and Flow:
Razik Mujawar introduced the different parts of a song—verses, choruses, bridges, and hooks—and explained how they come together to create a smooth and engaging flow. He walked students through the fundamentals of songwriting to help them understand lyrical structure and song arrangement. Writing strong hooks helps capture attention and makes the song memorable. He also shared techniques to maintain rhythm, syllable balance, and lyrical consistency while writing songs. He emphasized that hooks and refrains should be repetitive in a song, which helps people recall the song easily.
The session was engaging, with students participating in discussions and various activities. He made the session interesting by asking students to write short lyrical pieces, experiment with different ideas, and understand how different writing styles can influence musical expression.
