The Audio Guys Institute believes in practical learning. Batch 7 of the Live Sound course recently participated in an interactive masterclass on the art of soldering conducted by Mujeeb Dadarkar, a seasoned live sound faculty.

Soldering is an important technical skill in live engineering that all students should know. This session helped students bridge the gap between theory and practice while honing their technical skills.


Importance of Soldering:

Soldering is a skill that every audio student should possess. It is the process of joining metal workpieces using a filler metal (solder) that melts at a lower temperature than the materials being joined. It prevents equipment failures, helps you build custom audio cables, and ensures you're always gig-ready!

For aspiring audio professionals and live sound engineers, soldering is a fundamental and valuable skill.

Learn the Fundamentals of Soldering with Mujeeb Dadarkar:

During the masterclass, Mujeeb Dadarkar explained the entire process of soldering in a practical, step-by-step manner.

He started the session by explaining the different parts of a soldering iron and their functions. He explained the importance of maintaining the right temperature, and how proper handling of the tool ensures safe and efficient soldering.

Once the students were familiar with the basics, he demonstrated the different soldering techniques. He showed them how to heat the joint correctly, how to apply the right amount of solder and create clean and strong connections.

After this, he proceeded with cable preparation, explaining how to strip cables properly, organizing the internal conductors and preparing the wire for soldering.

Later, he discussed connector assembly with the class. Students were taught how to attach wires to the right terminals, secure the cable using the chuck and boot, and assemble the connector for maximum stability.

During the session, one of the topics discussed was tinning. Mujeeb Dadarkar informed the students about the various benefits that tinning offers. Tinning the wire before connecting it helps to prevent corrosion, ensures it doesn't get contaminated, makes connecting the wires easier, and helps make the connection stronger.

By explaining each stage carefully, students gained practical knowledge on how to build cables that are critical for live events.


Understanding the Chuck and Boot:

Chuck and boot are important parts of XLR and other connectors. The chuck plays an important role, as it grips the cable securely and prevents the wire from being pulled away from the soldered joints. On the other hand, the boot covers the connector assembly and ensures it is not damaged.

Mujeeb Dadarkar also compared two different connector brands, MX and Neutrik. A top-notch quality connector is needed for live events. Neutrik is widely used in professional audio applications due to its durability, reliability, and consistent build quality. It is also a trusted brand in the professional audio environment.

Mujeeb Dadarkar shared his extensive industry experience with the students and also informed them about the common mistakes that people tend to make. This helped them to be aware and avoid making the same mistakes.


To conclude, through this session students learned how to prepare cables, tin wires, solder connectors, and assemble them under expert supervision. This session helped connect theoretical knowledge with real-world application. It ensured that students were equipped with skills that are highly valued in the audio industry.
