Amidst the recent developments of the pandemic COVID-19 and the nation wide lock down that followed it, TAG Institute has been developing a solution that is custom catered towards e-learning in the field of professional audio and music production.
The digital classroom at TAG institute is divided into 3 main parts:
- Class Scheduling and management
- Live webinar based classroom.
- Online assessment and student portfolio tracking.
Class Scheduling
Our First order of operation was making sure all our students are aware of their class timings and are notified directly to their mobile devices regarding any rescheduling or downloading data prior to the relevant class or any additional info. We reached out to our class management company Classpro and they were quite interested to hear out our structure to conduct intuitive classes digitally. Classpro helped us with StudentsPro their student portal app via which students are able to track their class schedule, attendance and assignment due dates. This enabled us to directly notify students on their mobile devices and minimize information drop outs and keep a direct line of contact between our faculty and students.
Live Webinar
The next stage in our teaching process required us to have an intuitive classroom. We started out with the most common option like Skype, google hangouts and more. We soon realized that although very popular, these platforms lacked intuitive tools for the students and wouldn’t be of much help. The decision finally landed us integrating Zoom. We were amazed at how many options it offered our students to provide inputs on an ongoing class. One of the key feature was personal chat which allowed students to talk to each other without disturbing the class decorum. We wanted to main this because we understood that a real class dynamics depends on the communication you have with your friends. Other used features in our class are:
- Ability to scribble (annotate) on lecturers presentation
- A whiteboard, in it’s simplest form.
- Real time HD audio and screen sharing.
- Broadcast Audio straight from the DAW.
- Cloud option for students to record lectures.
Online assessment and Portfolio Tracking
The final key to this infrastructure was to be able to conduct assessment online without deferring to the actual way of conducting them. We simplified this into two steps -
- Theory submission
- Practical submission
For Theory Submission we primarily used two tools, interactive real time poll and cloud based transfer solution for student reports and write-ups.
The practical solution required us to provide DAW solutions to our current and future students. Once that was taken care of, with the help of tools like screen sharing, audio broadcasting plugins, our teachers are able to hear and see what the students are doing on their screens. All of this with the audio stream directly coming from the DAW, maintaining privacy for everyone. This allows us to help understand the students motive behind each action he/she takes and help correct/optimise it.
